North Facade
East Facade |
“EXTERIOR: Monnett Chapel, a one story rectangular building enhanced by a 1/2 story belltower on the north facade, is situated facing west toward S.R. 98. Measurements of the building are approximately forty feet in width by seventy‑five feet in length. A small cemetery exists behind the chapel. A small farmhouse and outbuildings are found across S.R. 98. Otherwise, the site is surrounded by fields. “Walls
are of blue limestone, load bearing construction, rock faced, and
arranged in a random ashler pattern. A watertable of white limestone
"belts" the chapel on all four sides. “West facade: The
double doors in a Tudor arch are centered in the west face of the bell
tower. Six stone steps lead up to the doors. The buttressed tower, has
louvered openings on all four sides just under the wide eaves of the
pyramidal roof.. The remainder of the west‑facade is dominated by
a vertical three‑paneled stained glass window under a Tudor arch
depicting the "Good Shepherd." The cornerstone is situated
resting above the watertable on the northwest corner of the sanctuary.
Two small windows, centered under the Good Shepherd window, interrupt
the foundation. The sanctuary roof is bell cast gabled. “South facade: A
wing extends from the sanctuary on this side and contains classrooms.
The windows have plain stone lintels. “The east facade.
The rear of the building utilizes a semi-circle as an apse. “North facade:
Contains three sets of Tudor arch stained glass windows and the north
view of the belltower with its one double stained glass window. “The one physical
alteration to the exterior has been the change from wood shake roof to
fiberglass shingles. The rear apse still retains the wood shake. “INTERIOR: Like the outside, the interior is in virtually its original condition. The major change is the addition of electricity in the 1930s which replaced the original gasoline lamps. Vestibule, two classrooms, and sanctuary make up the rooms. Seating capacity is about three hundred. Pews and all woodwork are of Georgia pine. Ceiling and exposed trusses are similarly finished. Altar chairs and podium are of white oak, quarter cut. The sanctuary floor is raked and finished in Georgia pine. The sanctuary is "belted" by a Georgia pine chair rail and finished in plaster. The thirteen stained glass windows are of opalescent glass in brown tones. Basement floor space is used primarily for storage and is unfinished. There is no plumbing outhouses are located nearby.” |
