Q: What is
www.monnettgenealogy.com?
A: www.monnnettgeneaolgy.com is a web site devoted to updating the genealogy of Abraham Monnett and his wife Catherine Braucher Monnett who settled in Scott Township, Marion County Ohio in the late 1830's. Abraham Monnett was a farmer and land speculator who amassed approximately 20,000 acres of land in northern Marion County Ohio and southern Crawford County Ohio. As of June 1, 2002, there are at least 420+ people who can claim direct descendency from Abraham Monnett and Catherine Braucher Monnett. Q: What are the twelve children of of Abraham and Catherine Braucher Monnett? A: Large families were not uncommon in rural America in the mid 19th Century. Abraham and Catherine Monnett were the parents of twelve children: Ephraim Braucher Monnett, Martha Jane Monnett, Oliver Monnett, John Thomas Monnett, Elsie Monnett, Augustus Eddy Monnett, Mervin Jeremiah Monnette, Mary Jane Monnett, Madison Welsh Monnett, Melvin Henry Monnett, Amina Josephine Monnett and Catherine LaVendee Monnett. Each child lived to maturity and old age - an uncommon event for the era. Q: Is the name Monnet, Monnett or Monnette? A: That's a tricky one, because they are used by the same family. All of the above spellings are variants of Monet, the root surname. For the purpose of this family, the most commonly accepted spelling is Monnett or Monnette. For more information on the spelling and pronunciation, please refer to the section in this web on the spelling and pronunciation of the name from the main web page. Q: Who was Orra E. Monnette? A: Orra E. Monnette was the son of Mervin Jeremiah Monnette (see above). Orra Monnette was also amateur Genealogist. In 1911 he published the Monnet Family Genealogy: A Noble Huguenot Lineage. The book has been one of the more widely known resources on the family. The problem with the book is that it was published in limited numbers, and in the 90 plus years since it was published, original copies of the book have become increasing rare and expensive. For more information on Orra Monnette please see the section in this web site devoted to him. Q: If the Monnett's were so wealthy, what happened to the money? A: They weren't Rockefeller's! Abraham Monnett's estate provided for his widow and his children, each receiving a portion of the estate proceeds. By today's standards, it would have been a healthy sum, but no means was it anything close to what we would consider by today's standards a great deal of money. But one must keep in mind that simply because a father is business success doesn't mean that the children will have the same successes in life. Many of the twelve invested in banking enterprises - a risky and unregulated venture in the 19th century just before the financial panics (the Victorian term for economic Depression) of the 1890's. John Thomas, Mervin, Madison and Melvin Monnett lost everything when their banks collapsed -- only Mervin was able to regain and exceed what he lost in the panics. Q: In the database section, some people are marked as "private", what does that mean? A: People marked as "private" are living individuals. While we show relationships on this site, we do not disclose places of residence, birth or marriage dates. Q: What is the crest that is used throughout the site? A: The crest that you see on the Welcome Page (and at the right) is used throughout the site is the Monnet Family Crest. While purists would argue that this is the crest for the Monnet family, people using Monnett or Monnette are derivative of the Monnet family that was granted the shield and thus use it as their own. Q: Who is Claude Monet and is the family descended from him? A: Claude Monet was a French painter, in the Impressionist manner, from the late 19th and early 20th century. The Monnett's are not descended from him; the Monnett's covered in this web site are distantly related, very distantly related.
